Here you can see photographs of Emil, my great uncle (first image on the left) and Bianca, my grandmother (middle), blown up in size and printed on cardboard, which the spectator is allowed to move and shuffle.
Above, the backsides of the documents from Emil are glued to the wall.
He carried the certificates and documents with him on his flight from Vienna at age 17, throughout his employment with the Allied Armed Forces, and until he found safety in Paris after the war. They show traces of time and wear, tears, repairs, and tell much more about his displacement than any text on a document could ever convey.
Sometimes, this research is more than I can handle, but the side stories offer a welcome change of pace. They provide a break when I feel overwhelmed.
But I find that staring directly into the sun isn’t my way to tell the story. As with all my work.
